Perspective
For PhotographersWeddings // Twitter / Facebook / Delicious / StumbleUpon / DIGG / Reddit

Photographers look at the world differently than most people. Everything is looked at with varying degrees of potential. Mental formulas are calculated for every scene, every shot. Light & Shadow, Color, Texture, Composition, Perspective, Expression…It all comes into play in the span of a few minutes or even a few seconds.

For creating portraits, good photographers often start with a mental projection of the image they want to capture, they know the appropriate camera settings and lenses that it will require, they make the light work for them or they create it themselves, they bring in their experience and their view of the surroundings, add in the ideas for digitally editing/processing the image and they make it work for the end result of an awesome (hopefully!) photograph.

Wedding photographers have to do all of this rather quickly, with large numbers of people, while making sure everyone is having a good time. At least, that is what I try to do. :-)

I am enjoying capturing weddings by myself, but for a few of my wedding packages, I offer a second photographer to come in for the day or a portion of the day. Logistically, it can be good to have two people in different places at once. Good teams can feed off each others ideas, sometimes even raising the creative bar. Sometimes though, the two photographers end up working the same scene. The results, while similar, can be awesomely different.

Take these two photos, for instance…

Neal’s Image

My Image

Neal Troester joined me on a wedding I shot earlier this year. He is one of the two awesomely talented guys with LemonLime Photography…yes, he cheated on his business partner, Eric, to come shoot with me. :-D

Anyway, back to the photos, this is an example of the same direction, lighting, and nearly the same settings and lenses, but the final perspective and composition, although still straight on, is entirely different. I wanted the beams in the roof to be in my photo to lead your eye down to the folks and Neal wanted the reflective ground to be in his. Ends up, the results are stunning and I decided I like his version better. The key, though, is sometimes just changing your perspective only a few feet can make all the difference in the world.

Out of curiosity, which is YOUR favorite? Why? Why Not?

To all my incredible and patient wedding clients… a HUGE Thank you!

I can’t wait to see our typhoon pictures!! :) :)

Dustin before looking at all your pictures and your explanations I do believe I just looked at pictures without really looking at them, does that make sense? I have to say both pictures are phenomenal and I have gone back and forth trying to decide which one I prefer, sorry can’t decide I love them both. Were these pictures in our proofs, if so I don’t remember.

  3. Ryan

So…I’ve looked at these a lot and still can’t pick a favorite! I love how the gradiated concrete leads my eye to the group in Neals (A LOT!) but I also love how in Dustin’s there is almost a circle of illumination with the light….it’s really just not fair to ask us to pick favorites!! They are both fabulous! :-)

  4. neal

It will totally help if everyone just picks the one the bald guy shot… Oh, poo! That would be both of us! Hence the logo in the bottom of both of our blogs.

  5. Caycee

Let me start by saying EXCELLENT choice of photo for this example! This group is smokin’ hot! :-) I love these shots….out of the two I think I’m leaning towards yours simply because I love the colors in it. There is one in our proofs that almost combines these two images that is perfect.

  6. ryan

nice work latley! I have only not checked in a couple days and blam! good stuff ;) recommended your presets today…I have been rockin the cinnamon, and heatwave!

  7. Eric

well, i think i have go for the younger bald guys image – just out of my bitterness of being cheated on. Honestly though they are both great and a great example of how it all works and the amazing results shooting together with someone you can get.

  8. Sarah

I have to say I like Neal’s photo better. I like the way you feel like your looking up at the goup. It gives me the feeling that the group has great confidence and it gives the picture power.

  9. Mike Reynolds

Both are great work (wish I had one shot of this caliber of my wedding)…I give Neal a slight edge.

Andrew+Heather Engagement
Engagements // Twitter / Facebook / Delicious / StumbleUpon / DIGG / Reddit

Heather and Andrew. Andrew and Heather. This pair is a dynamic duo of good looks and great company. Andrew is a fireman…firefighter…I am not sure what the proper title is…well, he wears a uniform and risks his life to put out fires, rescue people and save cats. Heather…well, she just likes her man in his uniform. She is a talented MUA (what’s an MUA, you ask? As a photographer, M-U-A is lingo for Make-Up Artist. :-)

We met in downtown Lee’s Summit, the home turf of the ever-so-talented dynamic duo at Photomementos. We shot around for a couple blocks and ended up at the WhistleStop Café for a cup of cold Joe that can’t be beat! I really enjoyed hanging around these two and can’t wait for the exciting photos we are going to create for their upcoming wedding in December! Trust me, they are going to be a blast. ;-)
